A trip down a not-so-memorable lane.

Nicholas May, Klaus to his friends, claims that the bad record on his name and on his driving is a big misunderstanding that could be cleared up if someone neutral tags along with him for a drive.

Feeling braver than most, I volunteered for the job. I mean, someone had to do it for the community. We needed to know the man we were about to vote into the community leadership, this was the last requisite that would put him in the leadership position.

Strangely enough, the position he wanted to hold was the Estates' CSO, that position has immense power and but in the wrong hands, it would change the dynamics of the community.

After 48 fines were delivered to him by the Estate, he applied for a hearing claiming that they were prejudiced against him and that most of those fines were not valid. I was as neutral as Switzerland in the community and I could reasonably determine the truth of the matter.

We started the drive in his Blue IVM car which I complimented and got an ‘I am still testing it out’, from the Estate gate with little fanfare and pomp. Those who came out only came to tell me to be on my guard and asked if I had any last wishes, I felt they were overcompensating and asked them to keep their thoughts to themselves.

Nicholas acted like he didn’t hear any of them which was commendable and tried to make me comfortable by offering me mentos and water which I gracefully declined. He then asked him to call him Klaus and drove off.

The trip started fairly well enough, there was little traffic and the road was free. He spoke about his fines, that because he is a fast driver, people always assume that he would overspeed and hit things or people.

He assured me that despite his fast driving, he has never been caught overspeeding which is quite true. I have seen his file, impressive by the way, and there was nothing there on overspeeding, what was however there was road rage.

We continue down the Express and watched the traffic emerge, he stated that people conspired to blacken his name and throw him out of the election. Just as we were about to come down the overhead bridge, a car swerved into our lane and nearly bumped us.

Nicholas basted the horn at the car and the car drove off. Nicholas went in pursuit. I held on to my seat belt for dear life as he pursued the Volkswagen E series. I prayed that whoever was in that car would slow down and apologize and all would be well.

The person did not take my advice and Nicholas had to go forward to cross him down and jump out to meet him. This, of course, caused a hold-up but Nicholas didn’t care, he went up to the car and knocked on the car window.

There were a few minutes of heated talks and a few people came to talk to them both. Somehow, it seems they resolved it as he came into the car and drove off.

I had refused to come out of the car, it wasn’t like there was anything I could do in this case. The other person was obviously wrong but I felt sorry for the person as Nicholas's face underwent a change from his ‘calm butter’ face to his ‘you must be roving mad’ face, I would not want to be the other person in the Volkswagon.

Nicolas ranted about the stupidity of the guy, how he would have caused an accident and this was one of the reasons he wanted to run in the Election.

Everyone needs firm handling, he stated, once a few start falling in line, others would follow.’

‘I have plans to become the Chief of the defense staff, I would get there but one step at a time.’ He proclaimed with a little smile.

He gradually calmed himself and his face went back to normal, throughout this ranting, I was only nodding my head and didn’t say a word. I only had one thought in my mind during the whole tirade and that was to never cross him when I was driving.

He was like a bull at a gate, it was like all the talking he was doing was propelling him to drive faster, and yet he wasn’t overspeeding. However, this was the Express and I am yet to see how he drives in the Estate. Should I have volunteered?

‘Save me and keep me till I can kneel in thanks at my bedside.’ I prayed.

He spoke more about his plans for the Estate and proceeded to give me a rundown of his manifesto; by the time we got to the Estate gate, I was impressed by him and doubtful of my choice. He drove round the Estate and dropped me at my home telling me to think about it.

I first went on my knees in thanks then proceeded to gulp down chilling water. He wasn’t wrong, most of what he stated is needed but would I allow him to head the Estate’s CSO with his road rage? Yes, I agree that he doesn’t deserve most of his fines. His rival, and the current CSO, probably wanted him out of the race but that road rage.

We can’t have everything and there wasn’t a perfect man for the job rather we needed a person that could adapt to the wiles of the job. I decided to sleep over it and decide the next day.

I was up late the next morning and as I rushed to get to work, I bumped into a Blue IVM, THE Blue IVM. It was a replay of yesterday’s incident but instead, I was the one in the other car and all I could hear were the words, ‘Everyone just needs firm handling, once a few start falling in line, others would follow.’

‘It is well, it is well, with my soul, with my soul; it is well, it is well, with my soul’.
